“I’m A Little Teapot” | 14Y Gallery

14th Street Y

I'm a Little Teapot is a new art exhibit celebrating the creativity and talent of older New Yorkers. This exhibit underscores the significance of community arts programming in fostering a sense of belonging. It brings together a diverse collection of handmade ceramic teapots, each reflecting the unique stories, backgrounds, and experiences of its creators, who are members of the 14Y Sirovich Center Ceramics Program.

The exhibit's teapots embody a range of ceramic techniques, showcasing the complex skills and innovation that go into their making. As ceramic artists learn to create these functional objects, they refine various techniques, including throwing and handbuilding. This intricate process requires an understanding of design, balance, and usability; spout placement, handle ergonomics, lid fit, and overall harmony are crucial design elements. These technical challenges push members to hone their craft while strengthening a deep appreciation for both form and function.

Beyond the technical aspects, teapot-making is a canvas for artistic expression, allowing members to experiment with glazes, surface decorations, and sculptural elements. The cultural significance of teapots across various societies adds a rich layer of exploration, with members drawing inspiration from historical styles and traditions. 14Y Sirovich Center's supportive environment and collaborative spirit enhance the artists' sense of community, reinforcing the exhibit's theme of connection and unity.
